Introduction

Medical recipe. Fragment (5.8 x 3.3. cm) of a papyrus sheet broken at the left, bottom and right sides. On the verso, the scrap preserves very scanty remains of three lines of writing (recto is blank). The brevity and the lacunosity of this fragment make the positive determination of its meaning extremely difficult, but the mention of a dose expressed in ounces (l. 2) and the sequence -ροκλ- ([ἐντε]ροκήλ[.?]; [ὑδ]ροκήλ[.?], l. 3, see below) suggest the papyrus should contain at least one recipe. The space intentionally left blank after l. 3 may indicate the end of the sheet, but it may also be used to separate two or more receipts. The text was copied in a cursive hand assignable to the 5th cent. AD.
