Introduction

Medicament label. Small papyrus sheet (6.4 x 2.7 cm) broken on the left edge, containing scanty remains of two lacunous lines: l. 1 preserves part of the name of the medicament, which cannot be identified definitely; its therapeutic effects against gout are clearly expressed in l.2. The text was copied in a cursive hand assignable to the 5th cent. AD.

Notes

  • 1.

-μένη: passive feminine participle referable to a specific kind of preparation (e.g. κεκαυμένη ‘burnt’; ἐψομένη ‘boiled’). Also possible is the following type of title: σκευασία Μενεκράτους ἡ διὰ τῆς ἐκδορίου λεγομένη (see Gal. Comp.med.sec.loc. 5.3 [12, 846.1 Κ]).

  • 2.

Because of the lack of space, the final nu is written above the line.
