Introduction

Fragment of a medical catechism possibly from a manual of ophthalmology (for erotapokrisis see Medicalia Online s.v. Catechism). The left-hand side is missing. The preserved section dealing with glaucoma (ll. 1-2) and staphyloma (ll. 3-17) is partly paralleled by P.Ross.Georg. 1.20 (LDAB 4778; MP3 2343), P.Aberd. 11 (LDAB 4539; MP3 2342) and by medical authors (cf. Marganne 1978, 313-20; Marganne 1994, 97-132). On staphyloma see now Medicalia Online s.v. Questions and responses are articulated with blank spaces at right (ll. 3, 5-6, 14) and marked by poss. indented headings (ll. 3, 6, 11-2, 15). Papyrus scrap (11.6x4.5 cm) written on the verso in a sloping hand. On the recto traces of a document dating to III-IV AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Isabella Bonati as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (C. Magdelaine, "Testi Medici su Papiro", ed. I. Andorlini, pp. 64-77).)

Notes

  • 1-2.

    glaucoma before staphyloma also in P.Ross.Georg. 1.20; Gal. DM 344-5 (19.435.13-6 K) and Ps.-Sor. Quaest.med. 362-3 (MS Lincol. 220, f. 41r). On glaucoma, cf. Marganne 1979, 199-214.

  • 3.

For the question, cf. P.Ross.Georg. 1.20.68-9. τόπο(ν) is abbreviated with an overline.

  • 4-5.

Cf. P.Ross.Georg. 1.20.70-2; Ps.-Gal. DM 345 and 349 (19.435.15-6 and 439.13-4 K). For the comparison with grape (e.g. Aët. 7.36 [CMG 8.2, 286.18-20 Oliv.]), cf. Skoda 1988, 286 s.v. πτερύγιον. The final alpha of σταφύλωμα seem to extend to the right in a sort of short line filler.

  • 6.

Etiological question as in P.Ross.Georg. 1.20.73-4.

  • 7-10.

    Text restored combining P.Ross.Georg. 1.20.75-9 and Paul.Aeg. 6.19 (CMG 9.2, 59.8-10 Heib.).

  • 11-2.

Question introducing different staphylomata according to size and colour (cf. P.Ross.Georg. 1.20.80-1).

  • 15.

    For the surgery of staphyloma, cf. e.g. Aët. 7.37 (CMG 8.2, 288.7-289.20 Oliv.); Paul.Aeg. 6.19 (CMG 9.2, 59.12-20 Heib.); Cels. 7.7.11 (CML 1.318.26-319.2 Marx).

  • 16-7.

Poss. description of the surgical procedures modeled upon Aët. 7.37 (CMG 8.2, 288.9-11 Oliv.) .
