Introduction

Remains of a possibly medical work (Oxford, Sackler Library, Papyrology Rooms EES P. Fay. number unknown). Papyrus fragment from Bacchias in the Fayum containing parts of two columns. It was part of a roll, margins are not preserved and its verso is blank. A paragraphus is written in column 2 between ll. 6-7 which may indicate a separation of subject-matters. The fragment might be from a medical treatise or from a kind of chrestomathy like the Hippocratic Aphorisms as certain word fragments suggest. Apparently, there is also a dissimilarity in content between the two preserved columns, but the evidence is too sparse to be certain. The scribe wrote along the fibres in an elegant plain literary hand which can be dated to the late third or early second century BC.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Marcel Moser as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (R.A. Coles, P.Fay.Coles 3).)

Notes

  • 1.2.

ῥάχεως would be suited for a medical context, but τ̣ραχέως cannot be excluded for sure.

  • 2.1.

There are many possible supplements for διαχωρ[ , but in any instance it's frequent in medical writers.

  • 2.2-3.

Coles suggests to supply either [φυ]-λαττο̣ or [ἐ]-λαττο̣.

  • 2.5-6.

[οὐ]-λαί, [κῆ]-λαι and [τύ]-λαι are possible supplements put forward by Coles.
