Introduction

Medical treatise on facial surgery. Two fragments (4x6.5 cm and 3x9 cm) belonging to the same roll and preserving on the recto the remains of 17 lines, which are part of the same column. Fr. 1 contains the central part of lines 1-11, fr. 2 the end of lines 4-17. Neither margin nor intercolumnium are still extant. The writing, running parallel to the fibers, shows an informal, quick and practiced hand and is datable to II/I century BC (see P. Berol. 9b, 127 BC). The papyrus is particularly remarkable for the ligatures, which connect the letters of every word, while words, groups of words and sentences are generally separated by a blank space. Ιota mutum is never ascribed and there are no critical signs.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by the Parma Digital Papyrology Team as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = H. Eberhart, P.Giss.Univ. IV 44; ed.alt. = M.-H. Marganne, CE 66, 1991, pp. 226-36 = "Chirurgie" no. 1).)

Notes

  • 4.

τ]ὰς πλαγίας τομὰς σ[υνάγει]ν (Eberhart) is possible. For σ[υνάγει]ν see l. 6 (συνάγομεν) and Gal. De meth. med., XIV, 16 (= X, 1002 K): συναγόντων ἀλλήλοις τὰ χείλη τῶν δερμάτων.

  • 6.

στενο-[χωρούμενα see Heliodorus, apud Oribasium, Coll. Med., L, 9, 1

  • 8.

The restitution by Kalbfleisch (quoted by Eberhart) is based on Galenus, De aliment. fac., III, 22 (= VI, 707 K).

  • 17.

χεῖλος may refer both to the lips of the mouth and to the strips of a wound. See Gal., De meth. med., XIV, 16 (= X, 1002 K).
