Introduction
Medical treatise and prescriptions. 12 fragments (fr. 1: 13 x 10.5 cm) from a papyrus codex regarded as an anonymous compilation of Byzantine date. As far as can be determined, there are almost twice as many letters per line in fr. 1 as in other fragments, especially frr. 2 and 3; such an arrangement seems to suggest that the fragments belonged to different quires of the same codex. A disparity in the width of the columns appears to be associated to different contents: fr. 1 is concerned with anatomy, while the remaining ones deal with pharmacology. Fr. 1 has been compared by Kudlien with Meletius, περὶ τῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατασκευῆς, Anecdota Graeca III, p. 111 Cramer. Fr. 2 side B cites an author, Ioannes Lucius, whose name is Byzantine. Fr. 3 preserves on both sides the remains of two prescriptions quoted by Alexander of Tralles whose content is magico-medical. A few lectional signs survive on the papyrus and the pharmacological text appears fairly heavily articulated, with recipes and sense units divided by the dicolon and horizontal strokes. Aside from the usual symbols for measures, abbreviations are freely used. Written all in the same regular, sloping book hand, the fragments are dated on palaeographical grounds to the 7th c. AD.
(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Corazza as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = J.W.B. Barns, P.Ant. III 127; ed. alt. = ; corr. = M.-H.
