Introduction

Fragment of a medical encyclopaedia. The papyrus scraps (18,3 x 11,5 cm), jointed from the bottom of a page from a papyrus codex, are written both on the recto along the fibres and on the verso along the fibres and preserve additions in the lower margin. Presumably, the heading in fr. A, ll. 1-9 (marked with a paragraphos before the title χειρουργία ἀντιάδων), is puzzling, since the text which follows prescribes not surgery but medical treatment. The content could be paralleled by Aet. 8.51 [CMG 8.2, 485.16ff. Oliv.]. Kudlien and Barns suggest that the text could be from Oribasius’ lost chapter on ἀντιάδες (only mentioned in Coll.med. 21.1-2 [CMG 6.2.2, 192.12-8 Raed.]). The main text is written in an informal sloping book hand, whereas the marginalia, probably copied by the same scribe, in a documentary cursive, much smaller.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Bertonazzi as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (J.W.B. Barns, P.Ant. III 126).)
