Introduction

Materia medica and prescriptions. The three fragments (fr. 1: 10 x 11 cm) belong to a papyrus codex whose surface is scratched in several places. The remains of frr. 2 and 3 are too scanty to be satisfactorily restored and no margin survives. Filling marks and horizontal strokes are employed to separate different sections of the text (fr. 1 A ll. 2, 4, 7; B ll. 6, 8, 10; fr. 2 A l. 3). Medical prescriptions have been preserved along with an inventory of natural substances and their relative properties.; in fr. 1 A, ll. 3-4 a magical plant (πασιθέα) is regarded as affective against malice, envy. The papyrus is written in a semi-cursive hand dated to the 6th c. AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Corazza as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = J.W.B. Barns, P.Ant. III 132; corr. = J. Chadwick ap. Barns; M.-H. Marganne, Inventaire analitique des papyrus grecs de médecine, Genève 1981, n. 54)
