Introduction

Magico-medical prescriptions. Papyrus fragment (12 x 5.5 cm) from either a sheet or a codex written on both the recto, along the fibers, and the verso, across the fibers. The upper margin of ca. 3.5 cm is preserved on both sides. Abbreviations occur for καὶ (l. 3 verso) and final ν (Col. i l. 4). The text is arranged into two columns on the front side: the first one contains the remains of two recipes respectively concerning a subjugation spell (?) and an operation in a workshop; the second column is concerned with the uses of the blind-rat. The text on the back possibly continues the second column on the recto and deals with a healing charm for epileptics and lung patients. The manuscript is assigned on paleographical grounds to the 5th-6th c. AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Corazza as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = J.W.B. Barns, P.Ant. III 140; ed.alt. = R.W. Daniel-F. Maltomini, Suppl. Mag. II 99; M. de Haro Sanchez, Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists (BASP) 47 (2010), p. 146-147; corr. = M.-H. Marganne, Inventaire analitique des papyrus grecs de médecine, Genève 1981, n. 62))

Notes

  • 2.

Daniel-Maltomini suggest in the first place a form of ὑποτάσσω or ὑποταγή, but a form of ὑποταξ- spelled here as ὑποτασ- is also possible.

  • 3.

επ̣ ̣ ̣ ̣: the last three letters are possibly deleted.

  • 1-2.

Cf. Cyranides II 3. In the transcript by de Haro Sanchez the short title is aligned with ᾱ in the subsequent line.

  • 2.

α in the left margin might either be a numeral letter or indicate that we are dealing with animals whose names begin with alpha.

  • 3.

The significance of the sign in the left margin is obscure.

  • 4-6.

According to de Haro Sanchez, lines 4-6 are set in eisthesis.
