Introduction
Medical and surgical treatise. The two papyrus scraps (fr. A: 7 x 9 cm; fr. B: 5 x 9 cm), in a bad state of preservation, are written both on the recto along the fibres and on the verso across the fibres and belong to a roll; according to the restoration performed by I. Andorlini, the first sheet should cointain the fragments Bv and Av and the second one Br and Ar; only the left-hand margin in Ar and the right-left margin in Av are preserved. According to the supplements, each line should contain 23-27 letters, therefore the columns should be of 9 cm wide and each sheet should measure 15 x 30 cm approximately. Five horizontal strokes, clearly visible, mark the titles of new sections (Br. ll.4-5 παρωτίδων; Bv. ll.2-4 [χειρ]ουργουμένων). The content of the fragments suggests that the roll could have cointained a sort of medical-surgical treatise κατὰ τόπους, from the head to the bottom of the body, in which each chapter starts with a title, probably the name of the author and the definition of the disease. Fr. Ar deals with an inflammation (connected with the parotid glands mentioned in Br) and perhaps with its appropriate therapy; fr. Av concerns a surgery performed in the neck area, where parotid glands, called διόσκουροι, (fr. Br) are located; fr. Bv probably discusses a surgery on swollen gland. The hand, well-polished, presents some cursive elements and ligatures and could be dated at IVth century AD.
