Introduction

Palmomantic treatise. The fragment (5.5 x 9.9 cm) preserves on the verso 16 lines, the top margin of the text, the left margin at ll. 8-16, and perhaps the right margin at ll. 1-4 (recto is blank). The scribe employed four different methods to signal separation (double spacing between the lines; paragraphoi; enlarged initial letters; ekthesis), providing a neatly organized layout which is divided into five paragraphs. The papyrus contains a palmomantic text closely related to the first sections of the treatise Περὶ παλμῶν (as attested by versio A; see Costanza 2009, pp. 127-147) and interprets five different convulsive motions in the head (ll. 1-2; 4-6; 7-12; 15-16) and in the brain (ll. 13-14). The script is a semi-skilled and semi-cursive hand, slanting to the right. It can be dated to the 3rd-4th cent. AD.

Notes

  • 2.

For the supplement [{E}ἱλάσκου Δία] see below l. 12.

  • 4.

At the beginning of the line the small dimensions of the vacuum rules out the possibility that the lacuna can be filled with the traditional palmomantic protasis ἐὰν κεφαλὴ ἅλληται.

  • 6-7.

Probably, a paragraphos fell in the lacuna; a single παλμός spanning l.4 to l.12 would be disproportionately long.

  • 7-12.
