Introduction

Medical catechism about surgery of ophtalmologic pathologies (P.Alex. inv.614 = P.PisaLit. 6). Papyrus fragment (6,5 x 22 cm) broken on the top, right, and left; only the lower margin is preserved. The semi-cursive handwriting is dated between the end of the 2nd and the beginnings of the 3rd cent. AD. Blank spaces seem to mark different sections. Several itacisms occur. The verso is blank. The text describes pathological phenomena related to the eyes (corneal injuries, cysts) from a surgical point of view, in the question-and-answer format of catechisms where short definitions are provided along with longer descriptions of surgical operations; it shows several parallels with the definitions from pseudo-Galenian Ὅροι and from Paul of Aegina.

The digital text follows I. Andorlini's editio tertia (Testi medici per la scuola), which prints some conjectures already advanced by D. Manetti in the commentary of the editio altera (P.PisaLit. 6) based on literary parallels. When no particular divergence is recorded, the reference to previous editions (A. Swiderek's partial transcription as P.Alex. inv.614, pag. 18; D. Manetti's editio princeps in SCO 22 (1973)46-49) is omitted.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Nicola Reggiani as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (partial transcription by A. Swiderek, P.Alex. p. 18; ed.pr. = Manetti 1973; ed.alt. = D. Manetti, P.PisaLit. 6; ed.ter. = Andorlini 1999))
