Introduction
Fragments of a prognostic treatise. The text is probably a compilation of exegetical notes for teaching the principles to be followed in the prognosis of chest complaints. The most remarkable feature is the close connection with prognostic material within the Hippocratic collection. Col. 1.2–8 freely paraphrases Prog. 14–5 ~ Coac. 383–7, explaining that the illness is less dangerous if a bilious/yellow element is compounded with the salivation; col. 4.3–11 is a verbatim replication of Prog. 15. Fragment A is the result of the joining of fragments d+a+e+c+b. Its upper margin is 2.3 cm wide and preserves the upper portion of four continuous columns from a roll whose lower part is lost; the intercolumniation is about 2 cm wide, and there are four kolleseis. Fragments F and G remain detached; the former is broken on all sides, while the latter preserves the lower margin. The text is written on the recto along the fibres in a round informal bookhand that dates back to the late 1st cent. AD. There are no lectional signs and the back is blank.
(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Andrea Bernini as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = I. Andorlini, Graeco-Roman Fayum, eds. Lippert-Schentuleit, 2008, pp. 6-9; ed.alt. = I. Andorlini, GMP II 2; descr. B.P. Notes
- 3-4.
ἐπιφέρω refers to the flow of fluid from part of the body, e.g. Gal. De caus.sympt. 3.8 (7.251.10–1 K) while δυσκολία connotes either generic symptoms of illness, or specific difficulties with digestion or breathing.
- 5-6.
The parallelism required by τε καί is incomplete here, unless τὰ γινόμενα (ll. 6–7) refers to more than simply the κορύζας. The possibility that a second symptom has fallen out should be considered (e.g. κορύζας τε καὶ πταρμούς).
- 6-7.
τὰ γινόμενα περὶ αὐτούς can refer to a set of symptoms (see e.g. Hp. Epid. II 1.6).
- 7-8.
μ[ᾶλ-]λ̣ον δ̣’ ἔτ̣ι̣ is supported both by ἧττον δέ (l. 2) and by Gal. In Hipp. Progn. comment. 3.39.
- 2-3.
τὸ χολῶδες is the ‘bilious humour’ (cf. Hp. Progn. 15) and τὸ ξανθόν indicates its intense yellow color.
- 4.
κα[τὰ λόγ]ο̣[ν would mean ‘proportional’, ‘regular’, ‘in a systematic way’, and it would refer to a regular distribution of yellow fluid in the sputum (e.g. Hp. Coac. 389 καὶ τὸ πτύαλον μὴ χωρέῃ κατὰ λόγον).
- 2-5.
Cf. Hp. Coac. 384 and Progn. 14–5.
- 5-6.
σύμφυτον suits the phrase well and evokes a balanced presence of a yellow element in the sputum as ‘innate’, ‘natural’.
- 7-8.
Cf. Hp. Coac. 384 and Prog. 14.
- 6-9.
Cf. Hp. Coac. 384 and Progn. 14, and Gal. In Hipp. Progn. comment. II 50 (XVIII.2 182ff. K).
- 9-10.
περιπλευμονικά would imply νοσήματα (e.g. Hp. Progn. 3).
- 1-12.
Cf. Hp. Coac. 383–7 and Progn. 14–5. The text is about the pattern of the five screening procedures of the sputum (πτύελον) pointed out by Stephanus the Philosopher (see Duffy 1983 and Andorlini 2007). The topics are i) the time, ii) the bringing up of the expectoration, iii) the mixture of colors in the sputum, iv) the consistency of the sputum, and v) its appearance.
- 1-3.
Cf. Hp. Progn. 14.1 and 15.
- 5.
Here κουφίζω refers to the process of alleviating the patient's suffering.
- 3-7.
The double negative μήτε...μήτε is reinforced by ἄλλο μηθέν, with the latter governed by κουφίζοντα and specified by τῶν...δυσκόλων. For ll. 4–8 see Hp. Coac. 48 τὰ ἐν πονηροῖσι σημείοισι κουφίζοντα, καὶ τὰ ἐν χρηστοῖσι μὴ ἐνδιδόντα, δύσκολα (where κουφίζοντα means σημεῖα).
- 6-8.
For σπάσματα or ἀλγήματα in Hippocrates cf. Progn. 15 and Coac. 388.
- 1.
The text is reshaping Hp. Progn. 15 (or even Coac. 386).
- 2.
For the technical use of συμβαίνω cf. PSI inv. 3054 et al. [M-P3 2386], col. V 8–9 etc.
- 4-5.
The author confines the good signs to a few specific marks and he allows the doctor to notice them and observe them as guidelines. The restoration [προ]σ̣έχειν is supported by Hp. Progn. 19.
- 3-11.
The content is close to Hp. Progn. 15 (with the insertion of lines 4–5).
- 1-12.
These lines are about the reasons for a favourable outcome of sputum. The restoration at l. 12 would be supported by Hp. Progn. 15.
