Introduction

Ophthalmologic catechism concerning the pterygion (eye disease) (P.Aberd. 11). The two fragments of papyrus scrap (fr. A: 8,5 x 6,6 cm; fr. B: 8,5 x 1,6 cm) in a bad state of preservation, are written on the verso across the fibres (the recto preserves an account). Fr. A probably contains the beginning of a column of 20 lines (right and lower margins are lost) and fr. B the middle of a column of 18 lines (all margins are lost, so just a few letters are legible); the first line of fr. A corresponds to the end of the previous disease description. Three paragraphoi (ll. 1-2; 5-6; 9-10) divide the text of fr. A into sections: the first one (ll. 2-5) contains a definition of the pterygion; the second one (ll. 6-9) describes the differentiation criteria between kinds of pterygion; the last one (ll. 10-14) deals with the surgery of the pterygion. The content is paralleled by P.Ross.Georg. I 20, col. II, ll. 94-115 and some medical Authors (cf. e.g. Hp. Prorrh. 2.20 [9, 48.6-9 L]; Dsc. 5.109.2 [3, 80.8-10 W]; Orib. Eun. 4.24.12-3 [CMG 6.3, 448.1-5 Raed.]; Aët. 7.60-2 [CMG 8.2, 313.3-10 Oliv.]). The hand is a small round informal writing and allows to assign the scrap to the second century AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Bertonazzi as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr.: E.G. Turner, P.Aberd. 11; ed.alt.: M.-H. Marganne, L’ophtalmologie dans l’Égypte gréco-romaine d’après les papyrus littéraires grecs, Leiden New York Köln 1994, 104-111).)
