Introduction

Sor. Gyn. 3.2-3. Two fragments of a papyrus codex (frag. A: 4.2 x 3.6 cm; frag. B: 10.3 x 10.4 cm) belonging to the same leaf: the scraps can be joined to restore a single column of writing on both sides, with a loss of only 1 line on the recto. The lower margin survives to a length of 4.5 cm. The verso contains a most famous doxographic passage in which Soranus deals with the issue of whether there are diseases peculiar to women (Sor. Gyn. 3.2-3). The recto preserves an unknown text: according to the first editor, L. De Stefanis [= PSI 2.117], it would be a genuinely Soranic section belonging to Sor. Gyn. 3.3 and reporting Erasistratus’ point of view; then, it would have been lost in a lacuna of Paris. Gr. 2153 [= Paris.], the only extant manuscript witness of Sor. Gyn.(contra P. Buguière, Soranos d’Éphèse, vol. 4, Paris 2000, xiv-xvi, who considers the papyrus as a later abridgment rehashing Soranic materials; but see Andorlini 2007, who supports De Stefani’s hypothesis). The script is neat and elegant majuscule assignable to the 4th cent. AD.

Notes

  • Verso, l. 1.

The text transmitted by Paris. (Ἀθηνίων καὶ Μιλτιάδης) is too short to fill up the lacuna of pap. The title of a work by Athenion and Militiades, or the name of a third physician has probably been lost (see Andorlini 2007, 54).

  • 1-2.

  • 6-7.

[ἐν τῷ α' καὶ γ' τῶν περὶ τῆς αἱρέσεως καὶ Ἀσκληπιάδης κατὰ τοὺς πλείστους]: the size of the lacuna suits Ilberg’s restoration.

  • 13.

“τε corr. ex το in scribendo; α del. et ο supra lineam” (Andorlini 2007, 55).

  • 16.

“Fort. μεχρι〚σ〛του ex corr. in scribendo ed.pr.” (Andorlini 2007, 57).

  • Recto, l. 1.

Possibly, a textual loss has occurred between the last line of the verso and the first surviving line on the recto: see Andorlini 2007, 54). [ἐπὶ τῶν ἀποτελ]εσμάτω[ν]: see Andorlini 2007, 57.

  • 5.

    ϋγιαινιν pap.

  • 10.

ϋγιαινιν: pap. The interlinear addition was probably inserted in scribendo by the same hand who revised the text (see Andorlini 2007, 659). The omitted word seems to be a form of the verb ἐπινοέω, which should be related with the preceding ϋγιαινιν.

  • 11-2.

De Stefani’s supplement η μ[ητρα γαρ γυναικων εστι μερο]ς seems too long for the available space. For ἡμε̣[ῖς δὲ συναινοῦμεν], see e.g. Sor. Gyn. 3.19.1.

  • 13.

Less probably [φη]μι δε (ed.pr.): first-person singular is very rarely used by Soranus to express his own point of view, see Andorlini 2007 2007, 62. Less probably [δίδυ]μ̣οι δὲ: the topic of the ovaries is addressed from line 18 onwards.

  • 13-4.

For ἐξ ἑαυτῆς vel sim. see e.g. Gal. Plac. Hipp. et Plat. 6.1.10-11 (CMG 5.4.1.2, 362 De Lacy), Gal. Def.med. 95 (19, 371.9-10 K).

  • 14-5.

ὁ μὲν ἔν[δοθεν αὐτῆς (or αὐτοῦ)]: see Sor. Gyn. 4.36.4.

  • 14-8.

For the supplements see Sor. Gyn. 1.13 and Gal. Uteri dissect. 6 (2, 896.8-14 K).
