Introduction

Hp. Aph. 2.14-24. A damaged papyrus fragment (3.8 x 15.9 cm), broken off on all sides except for the bottom, where the lower margin survives to a length of 2.2 cm. It preserves remains of 29 lines on the recto. The only lecture sign is an apostrophe at l. 7; in l. 19 a deletion is indicated by points placed over the letters. In ll. 24, 26 and 28 spaces are left to indicate the end of an aphorism or a sense break within it (the spaces must, therefore, be taken into account in the supplementary parts: ll. 4, 9, 11, 13, 16, 20). The papyrus contains an independent recension of Hp. Aph. 2.14-24, not referable to any specific branch of the manuscript tradition (see especially ll. 10-11, 16 and 22). The fragment is written in an “informal” severe style of medium size, slightly slanting, assignable to the 3nd cent. AD.

    Feyerabend’s supplement ([ο]ἷα[ι αἱ τῶν ὑγιαινόντω]ν̣) is not very convincing because it is only supported by recentiores (Feyerabend 1973, 26), while [ο]ἷα[ι τοῖσιν ὑγιαίνουσι]ν seems far more well-grounded, see Lamberti-Manetti 2008, 87-88.

  • 10-11.

    The space in the papyrus is much too short to accommodate the version commonly attested in the manuscript tradition: ὅκου ἂν τροφὴ πλείων (πλείω M [ap. Littré]) ἢ (adds V) παρὰ φύσιν (παρὰ φύσιν πλείων C') ἐσέλθῃ, τοῦτο νοῦσον ποιέει (νοσοποιέει MV), δηλοῖ δὲ ἡ ἴησις codd. Neither does the brevity of Aph. 17 as transmitted in the papyrus detract from its meaning, nor is the absence of πλείων a disadvantage (see Feyerabend 1973, 26).

    For reasons of space, [γίνεται] (pap.) and not γίνονται (cett.).

  • 16.

    Here remains the apparent necessity of assuming that something missing from the actual manuscripts has fallen into a lacuna after ὑγιείης. Contra Feyerabend 1973, 22-23: "Reckoning a space roughly equivalent to two letters after υγιειης to mark the end of an aphorism, we are still about 5-6 letters short. We can, however, note (in l. 24, 26, and 28) that as the scribe came to the end of an aphorism, he felt less need to restrict his penchant for giving a sense of spaciousness. Furthermore, while the space left after Aph. 23 is over twice as wide as left after 22, there is no need to assume that there were none wider".

  • 19-20.

    For reasons of space, [ξηραί εἰσι] (Va Gal[MP]) more probable than ξηραὶ γίγνονται (M) or ξηραίνονται (C'Gal[P]).

  • 22.

    After λύει, pap. contains a further sentence not transmitted by codd. According to Feyerabend 1973, 27-28, it is natural here to think of an expression like [οἶνος] κεκρημέν[ος] and to assume a connection with θώρη[ξις] ('drinking to intoxication'; Aph. 21), see e.g. Gal. In Hip. Aph., ad.loc. and ad Aph. 7.48. Nevertheless, the mention of the unmixed wine ([οἶνος μὴ] κεκρημέν[ος]) would seem more appropriate, see Dietz, Scholia, 2.137 and 2.537.
