Introduction

Medical treatise on dislocation of the shoulder. The papyrus (15 x 26 cm.), part of a leaf of a codex, is written both on the recto along the fibres and on the verso across the fibres and preserves two columns of approximately 50 lines each. The average length of a line is 6 cm., which contains about twenty letters. The lower margin, the only one survived, is 4 cm. deep and a page of text measures 13 x 21 cm. There are some corrections and additions, made by the original hand; a diaeresis is legible at l. 119, col. II v. The content deals with the instructions as to the method of treating a particular injury to the shoulder, a compound fracture with dislocation and separation of the acromion bone. In the first column on the recto the author suggests a non-invasive treatment for the shoulder in case of wound before a resection; in the second one he gives the instructions for setting when possible or cutting off the bones; then he discusses different positions for reducing the dislocation. In the first column on the verso a reduction technique by scapular manipulation is explained; in the second one the author criticizes the dislocation of the acromion bone made by some mechanical instruments. The author refers to himself in first person (δεδήλωκα, ll. 58-9 col. II r.; ἡμεῖς, l. 69 col. II r.) and alludes to another of this works (ἐν τῷ Τεχνικῷ λόγῳ, l. 59 col. II r.); the text is attributed uncertainly to Heliodorus. The hand is a small, angular and slanting book-hand and can be dated to the middle and later third century AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Bertonazzi as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = C.H. Roberts, P. Ryl. III 529; ed.alt. = M.-H. Marganne, "Chirurgie", no. 7).)

Notes

  • r.I.13.

According to Körte and Marganne, χαιμαφάριον is an hapax.

  • r.I.37.

According to Marganne, ἀπεξαρθέω, reinforced form of ἐξαρθρέω, is an hapax.

  • r.I.48.

[καταρτίζ]ε̣σ̣θ̣α̣ι̣ could be supplemented based on a parallel with l. 62.

  • r.II.76-80.

The content could be supplemented by comparison with Heliod. ap. Orib. Coll.med. 49.29.1 [CMG 6.2.2, 44.22-3 Raed.].

  • v.I.103.

    For [ὀλισθ]η[μά]των see l. 131

  • v.II.118.

    For the supplement of τ̣ὴ̣ς̣ [κε]φαλῆς τ̣ο̣ῦ β̣ρα̣[χίονο]ς see Ruf. Anat. 70 [142.8-9 D-R].

  • v.II.119-20.

    For [ἐπε]ρείσεως see Heliod. ap. Orib. Coll.med. 10.37.7 [CMG 6.2.2, 76.7-8 Raed.].

  • v.II.128.

ἐκπάλου could be an erroneous form for ἐκπαλοῦ⟨ς⟩ (Roberts) or the genitive case of the hapax ἔκπαλος (the attested form of the adjective is ἐκπαλής).

  • v.II.161-162.

ἔκπρισμα is supplemented based on Arist. GC 316 a 34-316 b 1 Bekker.
