Introduction

Gal. Plac.Hipp. et Plat. 1.7; 2.5 (?). Papyrus codex written on both sides, consisting of 4 fragments: Fragg. A+B (5.6 x 8.3 = P.Münch. 43 A+B) and Frag. D (= P.Berol. inv. 21141) preserve the lower portion of a single leaf (see Hanson 1985, 39ff.); Frag. C (1.2 x 1.1 cm = P.Münch. 43 C) probably belonged to another page. Lower margin survives to a length of 2.3 cm. Traces of kollesis can occasionally be seen in fragg. A + B (recto, ll. 5, 13-6; verso, 5, 12-5). The passage which appears on the major folio is part of Galen’s description of arteries to the lower parts of the body and the legs, an anatomical digression to cap his refutation of Praxagoras’ notion that arteries, as they divide and become smaller, constrict so as to become nerves (Plac.Hipp. et Plat. 1.7). The text of this passage has come down to us in a single ms. (Caius College, Cambridge 47/24 = C apud De Lacy, CMG 5.4.1.2); a comparison of the readings from the papyrus codex with those of C shows a not dissimilar text. In particular the papyrus preserves a better reading at verso, l. 20 [τὰ λελεγμένα, rather than C’s τὰ λεγόμενα]; the other differences between the papyrus and C are neither numerous nor important (see Hanson 1985, 43-44). The script is a small, handsome, round bookhand assignable to the 1st half of the 3rd cent. AD.

Notes

  • Fragg. A+B+D, r., l. 9.

ἐμ̣[φύονταί]: ἐκφύονται C. Compare the similar examples of carelessness by a copier in C, corrected by editorial revision (see infra βρόχια verso, l.4).

  • Fragg. A+B+D, v., l. 2.

[οἷς δὲ οὐκ] (= C): according to Hanson 1985, 47, considerations of space favor elision here ([οἷς δ’οὐκ]), as below in l. 20.

  • 4.

βράχια corr. Einarson : βρόχια C.

  • 14.

[ἡγο]ῦ̣μαι : [οἶ]μαι C. Considerations of space and meticulous orthography elsewhere seem to favor the interpretation of […]ῦ̣μαι as [ἡγο]ῦ̣μαι, rather than as a vulgar spelling of οἶμαι. Nonetheless, the interchange of οι and υ is admittedly “the most frequent interchange in the [documentary] papyri next to the interchanges of ει with ι and of αι with ε” (Gignac 1976, 197-9). See Hanson 1985, 47.

  • 20.

    [νυνὶ δὲ ἀρκεῖ] (= C): contra Hanson 1985, 47 ([νῦν δ’ἀρκεῖ]).

  • Frag. C, r., ll. 1-3.

[ἄν τε γὰρ] ἐ̣γκ̣έφ̣[αλος ᾖ τὴν ἀρχὴν τῆς κινήσεως αὐτὸς ἐπι]πέ̣μ[ψει καὶ τοῖς τὸ οὖρον ἐκκρίνουσιν ὀργά]νο̣ι̣[ς -ca.?- ]: see Gal. 2.5 (5, 248.15-7 K).
