Introduction

Anatomical treatise. Fragment (14 x 15 cm) from a papyrus roll containing a document on the recto and a medical text on the verso. The medical text, copied across the fibers, is arranged in two columns: Col. I is damaged on the left side, while Col. II is almost entirely preserved on lateral margins; the upper margin is lost. Spelling mistakes, sometimes corrected by the scribe, occur in both columns, and the text appears fairly heavily articulated with sense units divided by paratextual devices (paragraphoi, horizontal strokes). The papyrus contains an anatomical treatise which provides not only a morphological description but also a physiological explanation enriched with philosophical and philological definitions. Col. I and the first part of Col. II are concerned with heart (καρδία) and pericardium (περικάρδιος), the second part of Col. II is dedicated to the thymus gland (θύμος); the anatomical nomenclature is also attested by Rufus, Galen and Oribasius. The manuscript, excavated in the Arsinoite Nome, is written in a medium-sized, informal hand dated to the 2nd c. AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Corazza as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = M. Gronewald, BKT X 23))
