Introduction

Medical Treatise On Remedies. The subject of this volume or section of the work was ‘plasters’ (Fr. 6.3 [περὶ] καταπλασμάτων). Several medical writers of the appropriate period (1st–2nd cent. AD) are accredited with wholly or partially lost works bearing the title Peri boêthêmatôn, i.e. Antyllos (2nd cent. AD), a doctor of the pneumatic school called Herodotus (late 1st cent AD), Soranus (around 100 AD) and Athenaeus of Attaleia (1st cent. BC or about 50 AD). The papyrus, written on the recto, consists of six fragments drafted in a careful handwriting. It has become dark brown in places and only Fr. 1 is still quite light and smooth. No punctuation marks are visible apart from a colon after -οτες in Fr. 3.4 and a kind of mark above omega at line beginning in Fr. 5.8. Each line consists of sixteen or seventeen letters and sometimes letters are crowded at line end together for justifying the column. Fr. 6 contains the end of a book.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Andrea Bernini as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (W.D. Furley, GMP II 3).)

Notes

  • 2.

δυσαρεσ̣[- is probably a form of δυσαρεστέω.

  • 5.

For ‘apply the cupping instruments‘, see Alex.Trall. 2.143.25 Puschm., Gal. De caus.sympt. 1.8 (7.142.17 K).

  • 2.

θεῖον is frequently mentioned as a healing substance in the medical writers, but it never occurs in the plural.

  • 4-6.

Tumour of the parotid gland or swollen glands, cf. Gal. Simpl. 10.2.7 (12.266.6 K).

  • 8.

For ἐπιτίθημι in the meaning of 'apply' (of plasters or poultices) see Andorlini (GMP 1.12, 134–6).

  • 9.

A form of ἐπισημαίνω, or of ἐπισημασία, ‘access’ of an illness (cf. P.Turner 14.25).

  • 3.

δασεῖαν means 'hairy' and refers both to people and animals (but here probably to γλῶτταν in l. 2).
